How to make Kunun Gyada

One of nature’s blessed creamy milk drink is Kunun Gyada.

This cereal grain is a combination of raw peanuts and rice.

Northern Nigeria is blessed with peanuts and this drink is very popular among the Hausa folks in Northern Nigeria.

Kunun Gyada is rich in protein, fat, iron, b vitamins, magnesium, folate acid carbohydrate and many other healthy nutrients.

Benefits of Kunun Gyada.

  • Kunun Gyada increases energy levels. The rice in Kunun Gyada boost one’s overall energy levels ensuring that you can do your most important task of the day.
  • The folate in Kunun Gyada helps boost fertility rate amongst women. Research has it that women who take 400 gm of folic acid daily before and during early pregnancy decreases the rate of babies having neural tube defects by almost 70%.
  •  It reduces the risk of weight gain.
  • It boosts ones overall mood. The tryptophan in peanuts ingredients release serotonin which is a mood booster and can help in fighting depression. This serves as an anti-depressant and can give one a feel-good emotion.
  • Peanuts can boost the body with 35 DV of manganese which is a good factor in calcium retention, blood sugar regulation, fat and carbohydrate metabolism and since it is found in Kunun Gyada, it is indeed an immense importance.
  • It also boost libido in men. The peanuts in Kunun Gyada are rich with arginine, an amino acid that has been proven to boost sperm production and performance amongst men.

Ingredients needed in making Kunun Gyada.

  • 150g of peanuts.
  • 50g of rice.
  • Sugar or honey.
  • Water.
  • Tamarind.

Items needed.

  • 1 chiffon cloth.
  • Blender.

There are two ways of making Kunun Gyada.

You can make it thick which is to be eaten in a bowl or thin which is to be drunk.

I will be explaining both methods.

Step by step procedures on How to make  Kunun Gyada drink. (Thin method)

1. Soak the peanuts in water for about 3 hours till soft.

2. Also, soak the rice (smaller grains) for at least 7-8 hours.

3. Soak the Tamarind flavor in room temperature water in other to extract the juice.

4. Then, remove the skin from the soaked peanuts and pour it into a blender. Add 400mls of water to it and blend it alongside the soaked rice. After that, set the mixture aside.

5. Use a chiffon cloth to sieve the mixture.

6. Now, pour the mixture into a pot and heat it up on a medium heat so that it cooks properly. Then, continuously stir the milky mixture.

7. Finally, add the tamarind juice and continue to stir for some minutes until it’s even.

8. Add sugar or honey to taste.

9. Remove from the heat. Let it cool.

10. Kunun Gyada is best when refrigerated and served with bean cake.

How to make Kunun Gyada (thick like porridge method.) 

1. Soak the peanuts in water for about 3 hours till soft.

2. Also, soak the rice (smaller grains) for at least 7-8 hours.

3. Soak the Tamarind flavor in room temperature water in other to extract the juice.

4. Then, remove the skin from the soaked peanuts and pour it into a blender. Add 400mls of water to it and blend it. Set aside.

5. Remove the soaked rice from the water. Pour it in a blender. Add 200mls of water to the mixture and blend. After blending, set aside.

6. Now, pour the peanut mixture into a pot and set it on a medium heat so that it cooks properly. Then continuously continue to stir the milk so that it does not form lumps.

7. When the peanut is properly cooked, gently pour the blended rice mixture and continue to stir.

8. Finally, add the Tamarind juice and keep stirring for some minutes until it is cooked.

9. Add sugar or honey for taste.

10. Serve with beans cake or any snacks.
